So about 3 years ago I wandered into the massive Smith Family warehouse near my home and bought a ceramic horse. The horse itself was rather pretty, but it was coloured in that old horrible 80's style of black with gold highlights. Eww. So the plan was to paint it.
The thing is, I'm a terrible procrastinator. Actually, part of the aim of this blog is to encourage me to be a) less impatient and b) stop procrastinating. So anyway, it took me about a year to get around to whacking some spray paint on the thing, which got me to this point:
Yep, she got one coat of spray paint, on one side, the other had drips around the back and horrible blemishes where she stuck to the newspaper I'd stupidly lay her down on to paint. So it's time to finally finish the ol' lass's paint job, this time I'll do it good and proper.
Materials:
- Old ceramic thing
- Gesso or primer
- One large rough paint brush
- One smaller fine paint brush
- Spray paint of your choice (gloss or matte depending on what you're going for)
1) First things first, dust that baby down. No point going any further if the primer and paint is going to get all lumpy and gross because there's dusty crap underneath.
2) Next, to make sure the paint is as bright and opaque as possible the best thing is to prime beforehand. I used Gesso, but any primer will do. Start off with a rough coat with a stiff brush to spread the paint as far as possible as quick as possible:
3) Come back later with a much finer brush to give it a really smooth solid coat:
4) Then up out to some open air so that you don't gas yourself with the fumes, and carefully spray the paint and evenly as possible, being sure to get into all the nooks and crannies. Stay at least a foot back with the nozzle, the dripping tends to happen only if you get closer than that.
Done! Now all you need to do is find you'r new colourful friend a home amongst your stuff. I love how shiny it came out!
